International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach says he intends to face down after the top of his second time period subsequent 12 months.
The German lawyer, who has been in cost since 2013, stunned members at a session in the course of the Paris Games, saying he wouldn’t proceed regardless of being requested to.
An extension would have required a change within the Olympic constitution that limits the president to a most of 12 years – a primary eight-year time period and a second four-year time period, that he himself had helped draft.
“After 12 years in the office of IOC president our organisation is best served with a change in leadership. New times are calling for new leaders,” he stated in an emotional speech.
The new IOC president shall be elected in March 2025 at a session in historical Olympia and can take over in June of that 12 months, Bach stated.
No member has but brazenly campaigned to succeed him.
An Olympic fencing champion in 1976 who joined the Olympic physique as a member in 1991, Bach has dominated firmly since taking up from his predecessor Jacques Rogge 11 years in the past.
