Watch new rocket blast into area on first flight


The European Space Agency (ESA) has launched its Ariane-6 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana.

Developed at a price of €4bn (£3.4bn), Europe’s new rocket set off at about 16:00 native time (19:00 GMT), restoring the continent’s unbiased entry to area.

ESA chief Josef Aschbacher mentioned the profitable launch marked a “historic day” for Europe.

Unlike a few of its current American rivals, the Ariane-6 is expendable and a brand new one is required for each mission.

The rocket will take payloads into orbit extra cheaply than its predecessor, Ariane-5. The ESA is anticipating to make as much as 11 launches a 12 months.
